Alta Valtellina

Alta Valtellina is stuated between the mountain ranges of the Cima Piazzi group and the Ortes – Cevedale group, near Swiss Bernina range of Central alps.
There are six municipalities in Upper Valtellina : Bormio, Livigno,Valdisotto, Valdidentro, Valfurva and Sondalo.
The capital of district is Bormio, the old medieval town , with the tradition that goes back to Roman times, where the place was visited by the Roman aristocracy for its thermal baths.
The mineral springs still open nowadays are in Bormio and Valdidentro ( Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi near Premadio.
The new alpine sport station Bormio 2000 hosted many FIS Alpine World Ski Championships ( Pista Stelvio run) , also the competitons are taking place in Santa Caterina Valfurva
(run Deborah Compagnoni ).
Close to Bormio, on the border of provinces Lombardy an Trentino-Alto Adige there is the summer skiing station at Passo Stelvio(2757 m ) with lifts to glacier Stelvio.
Livigno is well known not only for skiing facilities but also for duty-free zone, where forexample drinks, cigarettes or petrol is much cheaper than in the rest of Italy.
In Alta Valtellina there s almost 100 km of runs for cross- country skiers,
the most popular Pista VIOLA leads for 25 Km in beautiful landscape of Valdidentro,
there are also

Pista SGAMBEDA (Livigno) 50 km
runs VALTELLINA and LA FONTE in Santa Caterina Valfurva
Pista SCORLUZZO and Pista SASSO ROTONDO in Passo Stelvio/Livrio
There are the possibilities to practice, skating, biathlon or sledging here, very popular is Dog Sledding, whith a special Husky Village , where you can ride the dog sled in winter and also in summer.

There are 5 ski resorts:
Bormio,
Livigno,
Santa Caterina,
San Colombano
and Cima Piazzi Happy Mountain.
The slopes around mountain San Colombano form two different ski areas.
One is from the southern part – village Oga in Valdisotto , and the second from the north – village Isolaccia in Valdidentro valley.
Finally they are called San Colombano-Oga-Valdisotto , and ‘Cima Piazzi Happy Mountain’ – Valdidentro.
There is one skipass issued for both Oga – Valdidentro, however the skipass bought for Bormio includes only Oga ski area.
