Bormio

In : Valtellina

It is most probable that the town Bormio got its name from old Gallic god Borvo, or Bormo (Bormanus ) who had the power to heal with the help of hot mineral springs.
The god later on has been identified by Romans with Apollo, and although it it hard to find his presence nowadays, his power still visible in the thermal springs, with water temperature
between 37-41 degrees of Centigrade, the warmest in the Alps.
There are three main sources of water Bagni Vechhi , Bagni Nuovi and Bormio Terme (where water comes from the “Cinglaccia” spring).
Bormio still retains its unique medieval town center from the time when it fluorished as a main trading point on the route from Venice to Switzerland.
Also the ski conditions are excellent, the picturesque slopes of Vallecetta mountain ( 3148 m ) with top run point is at 3012 m and the bottom at 1224 m .
At the altitude around 2000 m is located the new ski centre Bormio 2000 , which hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1985 and 2005, and is
the place regular used for competitions, and training by various national winter sport teams.
The run, where most of events take place is the famous Pista Stelvio modeled on the natural mountain slope, 4 100 m long with level difference 986 m and maximum angle 63 %.

On the other side of town bormio are the slopes of San Colombano and Cima Piazzi (Valdidentro ), extended skipass allows to ski in other
Alta Valtellina resorts Santa Caterina Valfurva (12 km from Bormio) and Livigno ( duty-free zone 20 km from Bormio).
Near Bormio there is also the summer skiing station at Passo Stelvio.
