Located at the feet of Monti della Luna (Moon Mountains) Claviere ( 1750 m) is a tiny region with a great past.
Here Hannibals elephants descended from the Alps on the way to conquer Rome, and later on Caesar’s army in the opposite direction towards Galls.
Petrarka mentioned Claviere in his work ‘Secretum’. In 18th century the area come under the reign of House of Savoy.The new roads to Montgenevre built during Napoleon time brought the traffic and prosperity to the district. After the WWII the new border between Italy and France has divided Claviere into two parts not very convenient for the habitants, so after the long the border has been corrected in 1967.
At present the border has only symbolic political meaning, but still the ski lifts located on both sides are maintained by companies from two countries, which leads to slightly different dated of opening and finishing the ski season.

Ski resort ‘Monti Della Luna’ near Claviere is the part of ski area Vialattea which offers around 400 km of runs in Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx, Cesana-Sansicario, Claviere and French Montgenevre.
During Torino 2006 Winter Olympics Claviere hosted several downhill, and Nordic ski competition.
Moon Mountains feature four different peaks : La Coche with run la Serra Granet, Cima Saurel with red Gimont, Col Boeuf with black run the same name, and Col Bercia, which is also accessible by the chairlift from Cesana.Another gondola lift from Cesana goes to Sansicario, thus Claviere is connected with the rest of Vialattea resorts through Cesana.
There are several ski lifts and runs, which directly connect the village with the slopes of French Montgenevre ski resort.

There are three kind of tickets in Claviere : the ski pass for Claviere only, one for Claviere and Montginevro, skipass valid for whole Vialattea area.
