Livigno is located 1,816 m above sea level. The village Trepalle (‘Three Balls’) is considered to be the village located at the highest altitude in Europe (2,069 m up to 2,209m a.s.l.).
The first documents from Middle Ages called this area ‘vinea et vineola’, which refers to the German word meaning ‘avalanche’, as there is always the danger of snow collapse in the valley.
The town Livigno is accessible by one road from Italy side through the Foscagno Pass (2,291 m) and two from Switzerland Forcola di Livigno (2,315 m) and the Munt La Schera tunnel.
Tough living conditions were the reasons of giving the area various tax advantages starting from 16th century. Nowadays Livigno is still ‘tax fee’ area, where the Italian VAT is not paid.
The prices are much cheaper (c.a. 20 %) so not only the tourists, but local people from neighbouring towns are buying here various goods, especially gasoline.
Area of Livigno is well known not only for its splendid panoramic views, but also for various snow facilities.
Total number of 31 lifts with capacity up to 47 thousand people per hour connect area of 100 square km of ski slopes for downhill, places for alpine skiing, for snowboard, with new opened Snowpark, ice-skating. The altitude span of ski slopes is 1200m from 3000 m to 1800 m a.s.l.
There is more than 40 km of ski-run where also the ‘pros’ are preparing for the winter season, the most famous is Sgambeda, the international cross-country marathon that runs through the valley to end in the center if the town Livigno. Another popular competition is Skieda ( Telemark downhill).
