Malga San Valentino ( Haider Alm )

In : Ortles

The small village ( 800 habitants ) San Valentino alla Muta is named after Saint Valentin, a missionary priest who came to Val Venosta at the end of 5th century to convert Rhaetic tribes there and in the nearby Engadine. He is referred as Saint Valentin of Rätien, and unfortunately is not connected with St. Valentine’s Day celebrated 14 February to memory of the one from Rome. The village is situated in a beautiful spot between lakes Lago di San Valentino alla Muta (in German: Haidersee) and Lago Resia at around 1450 m above sea level.
Around the lakes goes the old roman route connecting region of Venice with German Bavaria area via Passo Resia (Reschenpass), which get even more importance in Middle Ages, and in 1140 the hospice for pilgrims, merchants and travellers has been opened nine years before the one at the Great St Bernard.

At the beginning of 20th century San Valentino features the first ski clubs in South Tyrol ( 1904 ) , the new railway line to Merano opened following year brings more visitors to the village
starting the tourist boom.
The ski resort Malga San Valentino covers about 20 km of runs under Seebodenspitze (2859 m) the peak of Alpe di Muta known in German language as Haider Alm, hence the Austrian name of the resort.
Those skiers, who will find 5 km of Black runs not challenging enough can buy one o two extended tickets:

The skipass Skiparadies allows also to ski in the other resorts around Lake Resia : Nauders, Schoeneben and Maseben.
Malga San Valentino is included in 16 resorts of the big Ortler Skiarena, which one skipass for areas like Val Senales, Trafoi or Merano 2000.
