Passo della Mendola ( 1363 m), which connects Alto Adige with Val di Non became popular at the end of 19th century, when Austrian aristocracy recognised it as a popular health resort.
In 1900 the funicular has connected he mountain Mendola with S.Antonio (Caldaro) on the suburbs of Bolzano.
Due to the beautiful location with views on the most picturesque peaks of Dolomites the area of Val di Non is popular among bikers during the summer and amateurs of snow walking during the winter.
At the beginning of 2010 Val di Non is going to host 36 edition of famous snowshoes run – ‘Ciaspolada’ 7km long from Fondo to Romeno.
There are three places for skiing:
Alta Valle di Non, which covers the piste near Mendola Pass on the Monte Roen slopes , and snowpark near Mezzavia.
Monte Nock, which is accessible from Ruffrè and features the illuminated downhill run.
Predaia, which also offers an illuminated downhill run, ski school and funpark for the children.
While Predaia is a separate ski resort, Alta Valle di Non and Monte Nock are incorporated in one resort referred as Mendola-Ruffrè, which till last season belonged to the group of 16 ski resorts Ortler Skiarena.
The territory of Val di Non belongs to Trentino jurisdiction, thus Mendola-Ruffrè was the only one from 16 resorts of Ortler Skiarena, which is located in Trentino ( the rest are in Alto Adige, and one in Austria).
This winter season Ortler counts 15 ski resorts, and Mendola-Ruffrè is a separate one.
