Over 10 000 years ago people were using the plateau near the mountain San Vigilio as a pass looking for the safe place to cross the Alps.
Romans build two roads nearby, one following Val Venosta through Passo Resia to present Bavaria region, and another one through Val Passiria and Passo Giovo to the direction of Brennero Pass.
The medieval chronicles mention that in 13th century there were already two churches here of San Vigilio and San Osvaldo. The first one of San Vigilio still features Gothic frescoes from the time the area has been under jurisdiction of Trento Bishopric.
These are the San Vigilio thermal waters, that brought the fame and prosperity to Merano, recognised as a popular spa popular spa at the beginning of 20th century.

In September 1912 one of the world’s first cable cars designed to carry the people has been opened near Merano.
It takes the tourists the whole year round from Lana to the Monte San Vigilio ,which is the highest peak in Gioveretto range.

The ski resort is situated above the top station of the cable car, 3 lifts serve 6 km of runs in virgin white snow, and by civilization nature far from everyday’s noise.

Advanced skiers can make use of the special ski pass for 16 resorts of Ortler Skiarena especially Merano 2000 located just on the other side of Merano.
