MONTEROSA SKI

In : Valle d`Aosta

The biggest of the ski regions in Italy, jet not well known outside of the country is located in the shade of massive Monte Rosa, the group of peaks, the highest of which Punta Dufour ( 4633m)
is the second highest in the Alps ( after Mont Blanc).
Two alpine passes Colle della Bettaforca ( 2705 m ) and Passo dei Salati ( 2980 m) connect ski areas of three valleys:
Valle d’Ayas, Valle di Gressoney and Valsesia.
In Passo dei Salati the new cable ‘Funifor’ with capacity of 100 people following the line Pianalunga-Cimalegna-Salati replacing old ( but still functional) Punta Indren pass.

In Valle d’Ayas there are three main villages Antagnod – perfect for familes with children, Brusson witn first class international center for nordic ski and biathlon, and Champoluc which has the most scenic panorama view in the area.

Gressoney, situated in the middle of Monterosa Ski, is the real centre of the ski region.
Threre are two villages ( higher ) Gressoney-La-Trinite at the feet of Monte Rosa and Gressoney-Saint-Jean with old buildings, 15th century church, Savoian castle, but also with famous ski slopes like Weissmatten, and ‘anello’ run 25 km long.

The real spirit of the wild Alps, not contaminated with the present civilisation one can find in Alagna,
with small cottages and watermills built in local style of Walser. Here and in Gressoney Valley is the best place to observe folk tradition and cuisine of the etnic group which dialect belongs to the
group of ‘High-German’ language with roots in medieval era.
During brigh morning or evening sun the mountain peaks are changing the colour into pink ( rosa ) – hence the name Monte Rosa.
