The old trade road from Salzburg passes by the Carinthian Alps in the point called Coccau Valico near the border with Austria and Slovenia . Here, on the way to Triest and Venice lies the small town Tarvisio, known to the ski lovers for hostning Winter Universiade in 2003, and World Cup run ‘Di Prampero’ on the slopes of Monte Santo di Lussari.

  Tarvisio is also known for its winter sports high school ‘Ingeborg Bachmann’ every year ‘producing’ new champions-to-be. There were several world class atleets born and grew here, including Olympic champion Gabriella Paruzzi ( nordic skiing ).
The mountain range Montasio peaks above 2 000 m, and the skiing area goes down from around 1800 m to the town level at 750 m . The support of snow cannons provides best snow conditions during winter months and the beginning of Spring.
Besides classic downhill runs the slopes of Montasio are great for alpine skiing, carving and other fresh snow fun activities.The local alpine school provides nordic walks around the altitude of 2000 m near Montasio range and other local mountains including popular Cima del Cacciatore.

The tracks at the altitude are prepared for cross-country skiers of all levels of experience. Ciaspole (snowshoes ) walking in the great landscapes is another popular form of winter activity here. Recently to Tarvisio came the American husky fashion , that blossomed in kilometres of fast trails between the beech and spruce woods in two most beautiful valleys of the Tarvisio area, Val Romana and Val Saisera. Every year several Italian and international competitions in sleddog and mushing are hosted by a local sleddog school.
