The Fiemme valley bears the name ‘porta delle Dolomiti’ ( the Door to the Dolomites ) given long time ago by merchants, who were entering the Dolomites at the beginning of valley of river Avisio, arriving from the nothern part of Trentino. Here at Val di Fiemme the mountains looked like the giant door inviting to follow the river.
At the upper part of the river Val di Fiemme changes into Val di Fassa, where near Moena the merchants joined the famous ‘Dolomite Road’ leading via Passo Pordoi and Cortina to Venice.
The capital of the valley Cavalese(1000 m) is situated at the bottom of The Lagorai range with Catena dei Lagorai ( 2.754 m ), the area is called Alpe Cermis.
Around Lago di Tésero (900 m) run the tracks of famous cross-country center, which is going to host FIS Nordic Ski World Championship in 2013.
From Panchià (984 m) and Predazzo ( 1018 m) there is the direct access to Gruppo di Latemar with iconic Torri di Latemar (2814 m ).
Through the peaks of Latemar range goes an administrative border between Trento and Bolzano provinces, so the ski area Ski Center Latemar is split into
southern slopes near Pampeago – Alpe di Pampeago (1,757m ) , and nothern part near Obereggen ( Alto Adige ).
There is one skipass for both areas, and the skipass issued in Val di Fiemme includes Obereggen ski resort.
Located 5 km from Predazzo , Bellamonte ( 1373 m) gives the access to the southern slopes of Alpe Lusia and then Tre Valli ski area (Alpe Lusia, San Pellegrino, Falcade).
There are two natural parks in the valley, Mount Corno, and Paneveggio Natural Park, the second made famous by the name Stradivarius, who used the wood of red spruces from Paneveggio forest to get the best sound of their instruments.
